Dr. James Dobson – A Giant in Family Advocacy

Honoring Dr. James Dobson’s Legacy – From ‘Bringing Up Boys‘ to Military Families

Today, August 21, 2025, we lost a giant in family advocacy. Dr. James Dobson “went home to be with the Lord peacefully, following a brief illness” at age 89. His passing marks the end of an era for parents who relied on his wisdom for nearly five decades of championing life, marriage, and God’s Word. His influence on my parenting journey began over 30 years ago when I was a young military mother seeking guidance from his groundbreaking work ‘Bringing Up Boys‘. I was honored to reference his work in my book ‘Back to School Success: The Academic Parent’s Guide‘ – written before his passing because his principles have guided me through decades of military family challenges.

A 30-Year Journey with Dobson’s Wisdom

Long before I became ‘Sarge’ or wrote about military family challenges, Dr. Dobson’s teachings shaped how I approached parenting. When I referenced ‘Bringing Up Boys‘ in ‘Back to School Success,’ it wasn’t because it was trendy – it was because his principles had been tested in my own home for three decades. From young military wife to veteran’s mother, his wisdom about intentionality, strength, and unwavering values became survival tools during 15-month deployments and countless PCS moves.

Dobson’s Unprecedented Impact

Dr. Dobson’s legacy spans decades of strengthening families through multiple channels. He founded Focus on the Family to provide radio, TV, books, and curriculum supporting evangelical families and traditional family values. His radio programs reached millions, earning him induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame. His books, including ‘The New Dare to Discipline‘ and ‘Bringing Up Boys,’ became foundational texts for Christian parents. Beyond media, he actively influenced governmental policies related to families, serving on advisory boards under President Ronald Reagan. Even after transitioning from Focus on the Family leadership in 2009, he continued his ministry through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, never wavering in his mission to teach families about Christian faith and the importance of passing on a spiritual legacy.

Why Dobson’s Principles Worked for Military Families

Dr. Dobson’s approach to bringing up boys perfectly aligned with military family realities. His emphasis on emotional expression was crucial when my sons had to process daddy’s deployment fears. His focus on positive role modeling became survival-critical when I was the primary parent for 15 months. His balance of love and discipline provided the security our boys needed during childhood and other periods of uncertainty.

The military taught me that consistency is everything – whether in formation or in parenting. Dr. Dobson’s principles of consistent love and discipline weren’t just parenting advice; they were tactical necessities. When your husband deploys and you’re managing three boys solo, you need diverse masculinity models, emotional vulnerability, and responsibility training that builds independence – exactly what Dr. Dobson advocated.

For military families facing constant upheaval, Dr. Dobson’s emphasis on traditional family values, unwavering principles, and intentional faith-based parenting provided an anchor in the storm. When your husband deploys for 15 months and you’re managing three boys solo, his teachings about consistency, spiritual legacy, and the importance of passing on Christian values become survival tools, not just parenting advice.

“Back to School Success” Bridge – Continuing His Mission for Military Families

While Dr. Dobson provided the foundational principles of nurturing emotional well-being, fostering identity through positive role modeling, and teaching responsibility with consistent love, ‘Back to School Success’ applies these specifically to military family challenges. His work on diverse masculinity and challenging traditional norms became essential tools when raising boys who needed to be both strong and emotionally intelligent – perfect preparation for military service or civilian success.

While Dr. Dobson guided families through general parenting challenges, ‘Back to School Success‘ addresses the unique pressures military families face – frequent moves, deployment separations, and raising resilient children in an uncertain world. I referenced his work not as an afterthought, but because his foundational principles of intentional parenting have been my compass for 30 years.

Legacy Continuation – How Veteran Families Carry Forward Strong Parenting Values

Dr. Dobson’s tireless devotion to the family shaped generations. His voice championed the principles that military families understand instinctively – that raising children requires the same tactical precision we brought to our service. His teachings on encouraging boys to express their feelings, fostering identity through engaged parenting, and teaching responsibility and accountability became the foundation for raising emotionally healthy sons who could navigate both military culture and civilian success.

Call to Action – Investing in Intentional Parenting

Military families: You’ve mastered tactical precision in your service. Apply that same intentionality to raising your children. Dr. Dobson showed us the way – now it’s our mission to carry it forward. Whether you’re facing deployment separations, PCS moves, or the challenge of raising boys in an uncertain world, his principles of consistent love, diverse masculinity, and spiritual legacy remain your tactical advantage.

Dr. Dobson understood that raising boys requires intentionality, strength, and unwavering values – principles that military families know well. As the Institute reminds us today, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15). While we grieve his passing, his legacy lives on in every parent who chooses to fight for their children’s future and carry forward his mission of strengthening families through faith.
